Why hire a UK auctioneer for a European gala?
The European gala scene is international by design. Monaco, Cannes, Geneva and Paris fill their rooms with expatriate wealth, global corporates, sponsoring luxury houses and visiting royalty, and the working language of that audience is English. A native English-speaking host is not a compromise here, it is the fit, with no translation lag between the lot and the wallet.
What I bring is cross-border experience. Twenty years across the UK, Europe and the US means the pace, the humour and the etiquette flex to a mixed-nationality crowd rather than a single home audience. The scene runs on two engines. There is the high-net-worth Riviera season around Monaco and Cannes, where a single dinner and auction can clear seven or eight figures in a night. And there is the international humanitarian circuit centred on Geneva, the world’s NGO capital, where the giving is institutional and the guest list is global.
What both have in common is that the room is international and the evening runs in English. That is the circuit I work in. I have not hosted every famous gala on the European calendar, and I would never claim to. What I can point to is my own result: over €1 million raised in a single evening in Monaco, and twenty years of reading rooms like these across the UK, Europe and the US.

The one thing that changes abroad
At a UK gala, Gift Aid adds 25p to every eligible pound. Abroad, it does not apply at all, so a European event cannot lean on reclaimed tax the way a British one can. The money has to come from the room, live, on the night.
That raises the stakes on the auction and the pledge, and on the person running them. Generosity is not a UK phenomenon: the Charities Aid Foundation’s World Giving Report tracks the giving of billions of people across more than 140 countries. The job is to convert the goodwill that is already in an international room into money, without a tax rebate to help. That is exactly what a skilled auctioneer is for.

Common questions about an international booking
Do you host galas outside the UK?
Yes. I work across the UK, Europe and the US, and I have raised over €1 million at a single Monaco gala. The European and international circuit is conducted in English, so a native English-speaking host who can read a mixed-nationality room is an advantage, not a compromise.
Which countries and cities do you cover?
Anywhere the event takes me. Monaco, Cannes, Paris, Geneva, Zurich, Milan, Vienna, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Brussels, Dublin and beyond. Tell me the city and the date and I will tell you honestly whether the format and the travel work.
How does Gift Aid work for an event abroad?
It does not. UK Gift Aid only applies to donations made in the UK, so a European gala cannot reclaim tax the way a British one can. That puts more weight on the auction and the live pledge, and on an auctioneer who can build the room. It is exactly where an experienced host earns the fee.
What does an international booking cost?
A fixed fee, agreed before the event and never a percentage of what you raise, with travel and any accommodation set out clearly in advance. The auction software is included. Nothing is a surprise on the invoice.
